Should you buy the new Nintendo Switch OLED?

Nintendo has announced its new console today. After launching a watered-down version of Switch in 2017, we were waiting for the next generation of Switch. Since Switch came out back in 2017, it is not powerful enough compared to other consoles. There were speculations about Nintendo Switch Pro with 4K support. However, things turned out differently. Nintendo Switch OLED is the new console. Well, the ‘Pro’ is not only missing from its moniker but also its hardware. Let’s have a detailed look at the console and see if you should be buying the new Nintendo Switch OLED or not.

Nintendo Switch OLED – What’s new?

The highlight of the new console is its OLED display. It’s a larger 7-inch OLED panel instead of an LCD used on the vanilla Switch. From LCD to OLED is a big difference. You’ll be getting punchy colors, deeper blacks, and a visually pleasing gaming experience. However, the display still has a 720p display which is an absurd choice in 2021. Even smartphones in $200 are providing a better display than Switch OLED. Things get dirtier, as the new console doesn’t have support for a high refresh rate. It also doesn’t support 4K output on TV, again a big shame. So it’s 720p for handheld and 1080p max for television. Although, the bezels now less which will make the device look modern.

The Nintendo Switch OLED Model

Second highlight of the console has to be its new speakers. According to Nintendo, there are new speakers for a better gaming experience. Also, there is an ethernet port option available on the new Switch OLED. Lookswise, the new Switch OLED takes the DNA from its predecessor however the new kickstand is more sturdy. The new console is bigger and heavier at 421 grams compared to 399g earlier. Also, the internal storage has increased from 32GB to 64GB. Other than these changes, there is nothing new on Switch OLED. There is the same battery life, connectivity, joycons and everything else is identical to the vanilla Switch.

Should you buy the new Switch OLED?

Nintendo Switch OLED

If you are a first-time buyer, then go ahead and buy the Nintendo Switch OLED. It’s definitely a better purchase than the old Switch. However, for Switch owners, the new Switch is not a huge upgrade. You will have the same performance. If you play entirely on handheld, then you might want to upgrade. But for TV users, it is not an upgrade. For those interested, Nintendo Switch will be available from 8th October. It is priced at $349.99. What do you think of the new Switch? Let us know your opinions in the comments sections below.
