Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier is shutting down

Final Fantasy VII: The First Solider is a battle royale game from Square Enix. It came out in November 2021, and in less than a year, the developer announced to shut it down. Maybe stepping into the battle royale genre was not the best idea, or they were just too late. PUBG Mobile, Free Fire, and a few other battle royale games have completely dominated the space. And if we talk about any other game surviving in this competitive market, it will surely get a hard time.

Even though the idea wasn’t too bad, the game did not get enough appreciation. One interesting thing about the game was its plot; set at the earliest point in the FF7 timeline. Maybe the Final Fantasy fans could not digest this mixture of battle royale and RPG. The developer made the decision to shut down the service for Final Fantasy VII The First Soldier on January 11, 2023. Square Enix states:

Despite all our efforts to bring you regular updates with fresh and exciting content, we haven’t been able to deliver the experience that we were hoping to, and that you all deserve. So, we have made the extremely tough decision to end service for FINAL FANTASY VII THE FIRST SOLDIER.”

New content will be added to Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier

On a positive note, the game will be kept active for the next few months with much new content. Moreover, Final Fantasy fans can rejoice as there is also a remake of Final Fantasy 7 prequel Crisis Core scheduled to be released this December. That being said, the battle royale market did not welcome the Final Fantasy universe, hence sticking to the remakes of the original game is the best bet for the developer.
