Square Enix will shift its focus to the global market

Square Enix is one of the veteran companies in the gaming industry and its main target has always been the Japanese market. Apparently, the company now wants to shift its focus from the Japanese country to a more global approach to its endeavors.

This new plan was confirmed in its latest fiscal 2022 report, released last Friday (28). Reportedly, the publisher believes that “talking to the global market” can be a “fundamental” strategy for the business.

Achieving big growth in the gaming industry is difficult right now for companies that primarily compete in the Japanese market due to its gray demographics.

As such, it is critical to our business that we produce successful titles that speak to the global market, which offers greater scale in terms of customers and sales volumes.

Continuing in the report, Square Enix suggests that production costs are currently much higher than before. Therefore, the Japanese market may not supply all this investment in the future — unlike a global approach, for example.

Square Enix franchises are hitting great results in the market

Square Enix doesn’t seem to be going through a crisis at the moment. According to the report, the house RPG franchises are doing very well, with highlights to Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Kingdom Hearts.

The Final Fantasy series saw an increase of nine million units sold in 2022 — reaching 173 million in a lifetime. Dragon Quest had a further two million, adding up to 85 million since the first game’s debut.

Finally, the Kingdom Hearts saga has a total sales of 36 million. With the release of the fourth game on the way, that number has the potential to increase even further.
