Xbox One vs PS4: Phil Spencer admits: “We’ve lost the worst battle”

Phil Spencer played the “sincere” during a chat with the Kinda Fury Channel this Thursday (04). As per the big boss of Microsoft’s Games Division, the company lost the battle with Sony in the “worst generation (time) possible”, when the PS4 and Xbox One were the main consoles of the market.

To Spencer, the “Green Side” is only the third force in this business, behind PlayStation and Nintendo. Since the greatest majority of players already build a vast library of games in the competition, he sees a tough fight in trying to reach the top of this market.

“We are not in this business to overcome Sony or Nintendo. There is no big solution or victory for us. I know this will bother many people, but the truth is when you are in third place in the consoles market, and the two better players are, as strong as they are and have, in some cases, discrete objectives of making contracts and other things that difficult players to go to Xbox, it makes hard for us as a team.”

Phil Spencer, Head of Xbox Division

Phil Spencer concludes his thinking with the following sentence: “We have lost the worst generation that we could with the Xbox One when everyone built their library of digital games”. Spencer’s thinking makes a lot of sense when we think that the PS5 is a continuation of the PS4.

The backward compatibility made it much easier for players to upgrade to the new console. After all, all games are kept, they are only improving the experience while getting ready for the next-gen games. When it comes to Nintendo, the Switch is still there alive. But we are pretty sure the Nintendo Switch 2 will be compatible with the existing games. Not making it compatible would be the worst mistake for Nintendo after building a huge community with its successful console.

Even if we go and make better games, the situation will not change

Microsoft
PS5 vs Xbox Series X

Phil Spencer, also, discards a scenario where the critics made the company make better games will help in anything. As per him, due to the domain built by the competition, not even if Starfield turns out to be an 11/10 game, people will sell their PS5 to go for an Xbox.

Xbox
Xbox Series S and Series X

That’s a very pessimistic approach, but we have to agree with his point. However, this only makes us believe in the theory that Microsoft is buying studios back and front to force its presence in the market. If it makes games like COD exclusive, it will be hard for PlayStation to keep up.

There is no reason to buy the Xbox Series X

One of the right decisions taken by Microsoft was to launch the Xbox Series S. This could be one of the determinant factors to keep the success of the Xbox when compare with the PS5. The cheaper console allows people to enter the next generation. There are some sacrifices to be made, but you can play games like the recently-released Star Wars Jedi: Survivor without having to buy an Xbox Series X or a PS5. At the same time, with the Series S in the market, we still don’t see a reason to go for the Xbox Series X. The console is powerful, on paper, it surpasses the PS5’s horsepower. However, when we look at Microsoft’s “Exclusive” games, there is basically no game that can unleash this potential. Sony already launched several games to justify the existence of the PS5. Meanwhile, Microsoft launched Redfall which is far from being a “next-gen” title. We have to say if Starfield will finally be a good reason for players to buy the Xbox Series X.

The company has a showcase for the next month. Hopefully, it will bring more joy to Xbox players.
