Final Fantasy VII Rebirth: Developer Hints Vast World Full of Stories

With the launch of Final Fantasy XVI later this month, we expect Square-Enix to shift its focus to Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. The next game in the trilogy started with Final Fantasy VII Remake is slated for 2023 but without a proper launch date. It seems that we will start to hear more about the game in the coming months. The Twitter account for the game started to share some tidbits of information. According to it, the developer studio is currently nailing down a release date as the game progresses smoothly. Now, there is a new bit of information about the world in the game.

When asked how the exploration would work outside Midgar, the developers said players will have the opportunity to traverse the “wide and multifaceted” world with a “high degree of freedom”. This suggests that the game will embrace the current trend of Open-World RPGs. We are curious to see how the studio will bring the PSX’s game world to modern standards. If we look at the first remake, everything was raised to higher proportions.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth to Embrace Open-World Trend with Rich Sidequests

The latter portion of the week makes the interpretation even more interesting. Apparently, players will experience a “myriad of stories” during the journey. This seems to be a reference to various side quests and activities that players could engage in while roaming the open world. Hopefully, we will see more engaging quests than the ones brought by the first title. We do hope this goes beyond going from Point A to Point B and that goes beyond simply killing enemies.

Final Fantasy VII

The next installment is a great departure from the remake that started it all. To recall, Final Fantasy VII Remake covered just a small part of the original game. However, the developers expanded content to raise the scale of things. In the PSX game, the Midgard portion could be cleared in about 5-6 hours (Maybe less for speedrunners). However, in the remake, this story has more than 30 hours. The game also takes some major departures from the original plot. The “Rebirth” name suggests that we could see some big changes in the plot, as we saw in the Remake.

Final Fantasy VII Remake launched on April 10th, 2020 for PlayStation 4. The game earned rave reviews and strong sales. In fact, this title greatly helped Square-Enix amidst poor releases and fiascos. The next installment is awaited with great anticipation.

The story events will continue after the Remake and Intergrade DLC

Back in 2021, Square-Enix launched a DLC dubbed Intergrade for the PlayStation 5. The update brought more content along with deep improvements for the PlayStation 5 version. Then later in 2021, the studio launched the highly-anticipated PC port. The Intergrade DLC added more content and introduces the ninja Yuffie to the series. There are also all-new characters like Sonon. The game connects the Remake to the story seen in Dirge of Cerberus with the presence of Nero as one of the main antagonists. Yuffie is expected to join the party in Rebirth, and we are curious to see if more characters like Cid Highwind and Vincent Valentine will appear in the next installment.

For now, we will need to wait and see if Square-Enix will keep revealing details about the game. With the Summer Game Festival nearing the shores, we are waiting to see if there will be a new official trailer for the game. Although the game is expected in 2023, we find it hard to believe it will arrive in time. Hopefully, we will be surprised with a late-year release.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will launch exclusively on the PS5, but we expect a PC port later.
