IGN interviewed Mike Fitzgerald, chief technology officer at Insomniac Games, and said that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will have all graphical modes with ray tracing enabled. Players will have high-quality reflections regardless of how they choose to enjoy the game sequence.
Spider-Man 2 Will Bring Ray-Tracing in all Game Modes
The options for enjoying the gameplay will run at 30 FPS, 40 FPS, or 60 FPS — based on compatible monitors and televisions, of course. How did the PlayStation studio manage to do this? Fitzgerald explained:
“As this is our fourth game for the PS5, we were able to improve on everything we saw when developing the others. Our performance mode for this game has native ray tracing […] There is no mode in this game where ray tracing is turned off, there is no need for it. We’ve really figured out how to deliver what we think is the right Spider-Man image and visuals, and we want to make sure every player is seeing that.”
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will arrive on PS5 on October 20th. Ready to be surprised by Insomniac Games?
Spider-Man 2 official preview details combat, story and more
PlayStation brought an official preview of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and everything indicates that the quality of the game is impressive.
Starting with the narrative, the publication describes it as “a tale of two Spiders”. They share several improvements to skill trees, and side missions and progress together through the narrative.
The controls remain the same as in the last games and fans will quickly understand how everything works.
In addition to the new gadgets for the duo to stop criminals in New York, the big reinforcement will be Peter’s symbiote suit. According to Bryan Intihar, the game’s creative director, the evolution of this resource will happen in a similar way to Miles’ electrical powers, and the area damage will be quite a differentiator.
Even with the short duration of the demonstration, the alien suit’s blows in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 promise to be devastating.
With the “Symbiote attack”, Peter will fiercely advance and throw enemies back, with the “Symbiote Punch”, the tentacles will leave targets stunned and in the air.
As every costume has its specific power, the Symbiote Surge will unleash the hero’s fury on his opponents. Pressing L3 + R3 will trigger furious, long-range attacks.
In the first mission of the demo, the symbiote appeared in a laboratory, and its presentation left everyone’s mouth open.
The symbiote’s weakness in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will also be sound waves. Insomniac will make this clear throughout the gameplay but will make players aware of this danger using the DualSense. A fight with Kraven near a church will make this clear at the beginning of the story.
Enemies will be like anomalies in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
If in the first games, the villains were stronger technologically, in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 they will be like anomalies. Even Mister Negative will convey this monstrous aura, but not in the same way as the Lizard and Venom, which are linked to the transformation theme.
Following this line, Kraven’s groups, for example, will be larger and will have devices capable of disrupting the progress of missions, always leaving the feeling that they are getting stronger and stronger. The variety of confrontations is a promising feature of the sequel.
More combat mechanics
If the enemies are more dangerous, the duo will arrive more prepared. It will now be possible to parry/repel opponents’ attacks. Spider-Sense shows when L1 can be activated in the right situations. The demo had an interesting boss to put this skill to the test.
And the best possible combat mechanic of a Spider-Man is his good humor, even when he is being beaten. Even in dangerous situations, even when messing with a particle accelerator that could cause a huge accident, the duo will keep their spirits high.
On the other hand, the story looks like it will take on dramatic tones. The actors’ interpretations of Kraven (Jim Pirri) and Miles Morales (Nadji Jeter) were enchanting in the preview of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Check it out:
In my time with the game, a scene with Miles at his father’s grave had the teenager saying, “I’m Spider-Man. I can do everything myself.” A beautiful mix of strength, hope, and uncertainty on the line, shown to perfection by Nadji Jeter.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Will Launch on October 20 for the PS5.
